What is Christmas?

The Message of Christmas: Hope and Light in a Troubled World

In a few days, Christians will celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, hanging their hopes for a better year on the Christmas tree, believing that His coming is the source of joy, hope, and reassurance in this world—even in difficult times. The birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem is the greatest gift God has given humanity out of unconditional love. It is a gift we should celebrate every day because Christ’s gift represents our salvation and spiritual values.

But what is the true meaning and message of this event that changed history forever? The Gospel of John describes the mystery of the divine incarnation, saying, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” In other words, “God became man.” He is no longer distant but deeply involved in human affairs, and His name is “Emmanuel,” meaning “God with us.” This also signifies that God embraces all of humanity in the person of Jesus. Every human being on this planet is made in the image of God, and when we recognize God in every person, we truly live out the meaning of Christmas.

The birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ changed the world forever. One of the greatest blessings that accompanied His birth was the gift of hope. No matter how dark our personal circumstances may seem at any moment, we are assured that there is light at the end of the tunnel—and that light is Jesus Christ, the light that brings hope to the world. Christ came to dispel all darkness from our hearts and our world. He is the Good News for humanity. As Christ’s disciples, we are called to be a light for others. This message never changes—it is a message of hope in a troubled world. This is the message of Christmas, the only message that can bring peace to an anxious and fearful heart. “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11). As Christians, this message is for us. Is it any wonder that we see Christmas as a refuge from the harshness of daily life?

As we reflect on the nativity scene this year, in a time when humanity faces unprecedented challenges, God offers us hope through the joy of the birth of His only Son. Joy, hope, and reassurance radiate from the manger, where the infant Jesus carries a message: that God loves the world immensely.

The message of Christmas is one of peace and hope. All we need to do in this season is lay our burdens at the feet of Jesus Christ, where we find the reassurance and hope we long for, praying that He will be our shield, trusting that the Lord is beside us and will walk with us through the darkness. He will grant us strength, motivation, peace, and love—for God and for all of humanity.
